Wuuu Friday is always a good day! Especially if it’s followed by eternal freedom! Last Friday was my first day as a free woman and from now on I’m going to be my own boss and will live for no one else but myself. No more sacrificing my spare time or burning the night lamp for insignificant things. From now on I can’t blame no one else but myself if I don’t fullfill myself or if I’m not being able to achieve something. But shiiiittt I feel so lazy right now! I think I need a creative break first haha! Luckily I had this trip waiting for me. A nice blend of cold and hot countries. First it was a long weekend in Reykjavik.

It was a fast 3,5 hours flight from Helsinki to Reykjavik and already when landing I was tempted. It was a beautiful late afternoon, clear and sunny. The country looked such a rugged beauty from air. Ice, snow, mountains and nothing. Such big areas of no mans land. I can’t remember such interesting and capturing landing even though I have travelled quite a bit.
Iceland is very special in many ways. First of all is the weather. It’s so strange and quite terrible but interesting! I once thought Tasmania was bad but here the weather was changing in seconds in stead of minutes. The sun was shining and then it could just start blowing wind and rain or there was a horrible snow storm. There were beautiful moments but mostly we felt cold without having the windstoppers and stuff and felt to avoid being outside. Iceland was like a “hibernation land” – because I felt just being inside the little bunker (we had this quite cold but good house on a basement level) and not showing your nose out before the sun came. We had been planning to go on a Islandic horse trekking tour but it was impossible on this shitty weather.

That’s why this long weekend was about good food, cafeterias and restaurants. And we found some really good places with a help of this . Some Islandic people had created a very good list of all the yummy options no matter was is a breakfast or dinner time. The price level was ok. I was quite positively surprised because I had thought that it’s more expensive than in Finland. But I felt it was the same, sometimes even cheaper.

All the food that we got in front of us was really really delicious but felt something new to try. We were eating some really good fishes from the sea around. As a salmon lover Iceland was ofcourse a place to be. We were also saying cheers with a healthy cod liver shots on a breakfast. Had great coffee. Pizza with pear. Korean cuisine. Many different cuisines were available. And an interesting sweet of cronut – croissaint and donut. Beer was icy delicious. And beer is never too cold to drink even in the coldness. Mmmmm beer. One great memory of a beer o’clock was at the Blue Lagoon at 11 AM Monday morning. I am getting used to this. So much fun and life! I really think we people are meant to do more things outside of typical norms. Come on, Take some time of and go for a beer on Monday morning to the Blue Lagoon! The work is always there, but your life isn’t.

Now it was an off season and not much tourists around. So it was good to go even to the Blue Lagoon, which I’ve heard is pretty full during the summer. It was actually quite nice in the winter setting having the steam coming up and the beautiful rugged scenaries around the actual place. It was handy to have a three hours spa visit there on a way to the airport. They keep all your luckage safe so it’s like planned for a visit when being close to the airport.

Sometimes the scenery really looked like being on the Moon. So much unstricted space in front of you. Rough land, a bit of snow. Also the people are a bit like from another planet. My kind of people hahha, I liked them. Such a strange humour and I felt familiar when they were cursing openly hah. Nobody there washing your mouth with soap (yes my mouth was once washed when I turned 5 and everything I got for the B-day were My little ponies for fuck sake). On our first night we were assumed to be serial killers – snipers on a secret mission on this world tour of ours. Oooh my it’s always so nice to hang with these kind of people not being too serious what they are rambling about. Good times good times. Like I had heard Icelandic people can drink like Finns and they might just come to talk to you (without even being that drunk). These young people were some what really interested of Finland. And knew a lot. And obviously they had also heard that we have some issues with weapons… Anyway they got some sick humour out of it. As well as out of a German tourist who had jumped in a boiling hot spring.. Now I really get where do the jokes of Hugleikur Dagsson come from. Hilarious nations, but really had to think next morning can you even laugh about such things!!!

Islandic people. They are only 300 000 in a big cold island. Everyday they are showering in a egg smell but their tap water is as good as it’s back home in Finland. It took me a while to realize it was the hydrogen sulfide when in the shower first time! Even they are being pretty isolated they are a trend aware nation, my friend told me there were hipsters 10 years before Finland hah. And yeah there were such interesting small boutiques along the homey mains street. I don’t know how these people can make it during the winter and what to they do, but I suppose the legandary saying of Kimi Räikkönen about Finns would maybe suit Icelandind people better: All they do is fish and f**!? But these guys have to take care of not to bang their cousin. Luckily they have this application to check if they are relatives or not. Unlike the Maltese back on my home rock hahaa!
Quick facts:
– There are 328 000 people living in Iceland which is 103 000 square kilometres
– The winter is considered to be mild, there are low temperatures because of the sea, but I found it harsh because of the strong cold wind or snow storms or rain. Summers are cool.
– Iceland has a lot of different beautiful nature. Probably it would be good to visit atleast in different seasons.
– Reykjavik is a really trendy town. Nice concepts when it comes to restaurants and food in general. Interesting small unique boutiques.
– Price level is scandinavian high level but a bit more reasonable than before the great depression.
